Zünd UK announces availability of Prep Center workflow software

Zünd UK has announced the launch of Prep Center workflow software in the UK, with immediate availability.

Developed for long-term reliability and stability in specialist environments, Prep Center interfaces with Zünd Cut Center and GTK Cut and any number of PDFs and graphics to create fully laid-out, ready-to-print files, automatically extracting cutting and printing paths from PDF, EPS and AI files and placing them onto the correct layers.

Users of Zünd digital cutting tables will find the software capable of achieving all types of printing and cutting layers – including routing, creasing, kiss-cutting, V-cutting and engraving – at very high speeds, thanks to full multi-core processor utilisation and 64-bit architecture. Cut times can also be estimated thanks to excellent integration with Zünd Cut Center software.

Prep Center creates hot folders that monitor for new files, feeding them into the print-to-cut workflow, while its integrated professional vector editor supports offsets and transformations while precision adjustments can be made to the final print with the panel and layout editors. It features settings for bleed, cropping, scaling, vectorising, labels and more.

The software also helps users maximise their materials and reduce waste by supporting True Shape Nesting for optimal shape packing and handling double-sided media and intelligent de-duplication. It automatically places register dots for cutting, with the option of adding metadata such as QR codes and barcodes for cutting guidance.

It features JavaScript support and understands PDF, EPS, AI, PSD, TIFF, DVI, BMP, PNG, JPEG, and GIF, and creates PDF and EPS print files and ZCC, GTK, HPGL, AI, and DXF cut files.

"Prep Center is a very stable product with much more control and more function options than a standard large RIP," comments Peter Giddings, Sales Director, Zünd Plotting Systems (UK) Ltd. "It is specialist software that reduces the work needed to be performed by printer and cutter operators in the production environment while delivering precise, resource-efficient results."

Prep Center was developed by Grafitroniks, the reseller of Zünd equipment in France, and is available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and GNU/Linux. Zünd UK is inviting businesses to attend demonstrations of the software and its complementary cutting systems at its dedicated suite in St Albans in 2016.

Zünd G3 cutter creates 'exceptional quality' samples for Cavan Box

Irish packaging specialist Cavan Box has invested in a new Zünd G3 L2500 from Zünd UK to produce samples it describes as 'exceptional'.

Established as a small sheet plant in the angling Mecca of County Cavan in 1981, 100 per cent Irish-owned Cavan Box has developed over three decades into a box plant supplying the food industry, medical and general engineering sectors. Its production facilities meet all the necessary accreditations demanded by leading blue chip clients while never forgetting the requirements of small manufacturers.

Cavan Box frequently upgrades its conversion machinery, typically every seven years. The purchase of the Zünd G3 L2500, installed at the end of 2015, was 'the obvious progression' for sample-making, says Anselm Lovett, Managing Director of Cavan Box.

"We noticed the machine in some of the well-known independents in the UK and a day with Zünd customer Atlas Packaging in Barnstaple sealed the deal for us.

"We moved up from another UK supplier who didn’t have the back-up assistance that Zünd offers. The training from Zünd was also light years ahead of our previous supplier – we have a full complement of people who can now use the table.

"The turnaround for samples was always quick but now the quality of the sample is exceptional."

Anselm Lovett also praised Greg Heather, appointed as Zünd UK Sales Account Manager for the Midlands, North-West England, Wales and Ireland in May 2015, for his 'very good' knowledge of the technology.

Nene Packaging welcomes customers of all shapes and sizes with Zünd S3 cutter

Nene Packaging has installed a Zünd S3 digital cutting table at its Northampton factory, enabling it to produce packaging and display samples for customers of all sizes.

As an approved supplier for Tesco and producer of POS and floor displays for other large supermarket and retail names, Nene Packaging accommodates customers with large budgets, but its ageing CAD tables and screen-printing equipment meant small businesses were being priced out.

"Our two CAD tables were antiquated, slow and limited to cutting out plain cardboard," explains Nene Packaging's Owner, Rob Lugmayer. "To produce low-volume runs our customers needed to spend £100 to £200 on tooling costs, which made it impossible for smaller businesses.

"Furthermore we've experienced significant customer demand for digitally printed, full-sized mock-ups. We needed an upgrade to drive forward the marketplace."

In March 2016 Zünd UK distributor CMYUK supplied an ex-display Zünd S3 to replace one of the CAD tables, alongside a new EFI VUTEk wide-format printer, which alleviates prohibitive tooling costs as well as speeding up the sample-making process and enabling short production runs.

"We'd heard good things about Zünd and CMYUK so went to the supplier when the time was right to upgrade to a digital table," says Rob Lugmayer. "CMYUK was able to offer a very good deal on the Zünd and printer together because they work so well hand in hand."

He adds that the Nene Packaging team went to Zünd UK's dedicated demonstration suite in St Albans to see the Zünd S3 in action.

"Our designers were really impressed; it will benefit them no end and allow them to do things they couldn't do before," he says. "It's more than a sample table, it's a sophisticated production machine and design table, giving additional skill sets to members of staff in the Nene Packaging factory."

The Zünd S3 features a camera system that reads registration dots printed outside the main printing area and cuts accordingly – quickly, safely and efficiently to reduce waste materials. Like all Zünd cutters it offers modular tooling, enabling automated processing of a wide variety of materials up to 25mm thick, making it ideal for both Nene Packaging's POS and display sample production and its general brown-box work for engineering parts. It also features a compact footprint and is supplied with Zünd UK's nationwide support as standard.

"Nene Packaging is now able to open its business to a range of customers requiring samples and short-run production, in addition to its long established screen-printing and converting services," says Peter Giddings, Sales Director, Zünd Plotting Systems (UK) Ltd. "It will offer greater production speeds and open up some really interesting design avenues – we're interested to see what they achieve with it."

Rob Lugmayer adds that Nene Packaging may replace its remaining CAD cutter with a second Zünd digital system at a later date, having been consistently impressed with the first installation. "We should have bought one years ago," he says.
